Amb Idris:Egypt maintains vital role in peacebuilding efforts

On his appointment as a member of the Advisory Group of the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund for a period of two years, former representative of Egypt to the United Nations in New York Ambassador Mohamed Idris gave credit to Egypt and its foreign ministry which is deeply rooted in distinguished diplomacy. 

Over the phone to (Cairo Local Time), he shed light on the role of the UN Peacebuilding Fund. Its main mission, he highlighted, is to create and help countries emerging from conflicts be able to refunction. This fund operates on the basis of respecting national ownership and helps the country implement its own national plans, he stated.

As a great country in Africa, he illustrated, Egypt is engaged through the African Union and through our national policies, and most of the activities entrusted to the Fund are in Africa. We support the peace-building activities in the continent and thus we are promoting the work of the UN, he asserted.

His Excellency elaborated that Cairo is a major player in maintaining peace worldwide. One of the important pillars of Egypt’s foreign policy is peace and development whether in the Middle East or in Africa. We were always supportive in creating peace from an objective point of view through creating the conducive circumstances, playing a role of reconciliation, building common grounds, bridging gaps and trying to contain any conflicts in the region and finding peaceful outcomes and solutions. 

The selection of Ambassador Idris is a culmination of his efforts during Egypt’s presidency of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission in 2021, and an affirmation of Egypt’s leadership in enhancing the effectiveness of the United Nations peacebuilding structure since its establishment in 2005. This is the fourth time that an Egyptian is a member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, representing African countries, which indicates Egypt’s leading position in supporting peacebuilding efforts at the UN and African levels.
