Human Development Expert Amira El-Masry highlighted the answer of when we can decide for our goals, saying that they are to be set during all time of our whole lives and it has nothing to do with our age. She declared that throughout the years we need support from people around us; parents, teachers, friends and coworkers.
In a phone call with (The Breakfast Show), El-Masry believed that most parents want their children to follow in their footsteps, recognizing it as a global phenomenon with exception of some people who manage to break the chain and give their children the right to choose exactly what they want.
She is neither with nor against such a belief but she advised parents if they recognize that their kid does not have the skills or not interested for this career, to encourage them not to pursuit, pointing that children go into the same profession as their parents because simply they have grown up with a background in the field, know something about the profession.
The human development expert mentioned “hesitance” as a serious problem. Choosing a career starts from a very young age; it should not be kept to the last minute at the end of high school education. She urged parents to expose their children to different materials, activities, and skills and see what they excel at. Thus, when they reach high school, they are considered young adults who have understanding and can set a goal.
El-Masry referred to the importance of understanding the difference between a dream and a goal. You can dream of whatever you want and can imagine it too, but a goal must be specific and measurable, she illustrated.
In addition, she referred to a research conducted on young children’s goals where most of them dream of becoming a soccer player, believing that they have the talent of players such as Mohamed Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. She explained to the children that such players worked on themselves a lot, spending time, effort, and money to reach what they reached right now. She concluded her words by urging parents to discuss with their children their dreams as to help them to set their goals.
