In the light of President Abdel Fattah e-Sisi’s inspection of the Alexandria Port and the ongoing process of developing its facilities, especially the multi-purpose logistics station, docks and modern warehouses, Economist Pacinthe Fahmy said that ports are essential for an easy entry and exit from the market and it is of great importance to be developed in an international level to satisfy the need of the major cross-border companies who want to invest in Egypt.
In a phone call with (Africa Today), Fahmy stressed that the development of the ports is a key point that is needed to be done on several angles; technological development, proper services, efficient people working and avoiding as much as possible both routine and corruption pointing that inspection nowadays is extremely important to make sure that the ports are operating according to the international standards.
“We are in competition with different countries offering such services in the region, especially in the Mediterranean. We need to develop our ports and establish others in the very near future,” she said.
Furthermore, the economic expert underscored that all the projects accomplished in Egypt are done by Egyptian labors, raw material, and finance. Such projects, she believed, have created an easy way to develop job opportunities, decrease the level of unemployment, decrease the level of poverty, and increase the level of services offered to the people. All our work, she said, is turning into an economy; creating demand and by having demand and consumption the economy develops and moves further.
As for the president’s keenness to speak to the youth working in the project, Fahmy underlined his great efforts to explain the future of Egypt and how they should start because they do not have enough experience, believing that this should be done in each governorate by the governors themselves explaining its wealth and the possible establishing projects.
The economist highlighted the importance of forming regional groups conveying that the Mediterranean is one of the major regions in the world. Thus, if we cooperate together we will develop a way to complement each other and not to compete with each other, she said, adding that this was a very negative policy used in the past. “If we cooperate on building a proper policy and implement economic diplomacy, all of us will be winning,” she mentioned.
Fahmy revealed that when exported products fail to match the international standards, it negatively affects our reputation and the whole market. She suggested having an institution which could study exactly the qualifications needed for the international market.
Dr. Fahmy is very optimistic about the future believing that Egypt enjoys economic diversification as well as a very clear vision about the future. Egypt’s performance in the future will be much better, she asserted, declaring that economics are not personal opinions but there are ratios and indices referring to the positive evaluation Egypt’s economic performance has given by all the international institutions during that last few years.
