Supervisor of the Regional Center for Research on New and Renewable Energy Dr. Adel el Samahy said that the idea of establishing the first solar lab in the region started in 2014 during President Abdel Fattah e-Sisi’s visit to China when an agreement was signed.
In his interview with (Cairo Local Time), he asserted that all machines are restored and the lab is now run individually. It is a preindustrial level lab which means we can test any new technology in manufacturing the photovoltaics (PV) in it before sending it to final production and also it is used for testing new materials suitable for our environment and of course it is a method for technology transfer, he elaborated.
El Samahy added that this is the first lab where Egypt can manufacture the whole solar cell itself which takes 16 steps and Sohag was chosen because Upper Egypt is the main source of solar energy, furthermore the High Dam is located there.
He assured that Egypt is one of the most important countries that generate energy especially solar energy, and so that’s why the EU and China are sharing projects with us to make use of our wealth of solar energy. Moreover, we have plans with China in the field of renewable energy so we have solar energy projects as well as projects of bio gas and we are planning to have wind energy as well, he reaffirmed.
In that regard, he announced that the Academy of Scientific Research had already a summer school for renewable energy in cooperation with the Italian side represented by the Embassy of Italia adding that 600 students applied for it and they chose 100 only.
