Ahmad Nour El Din said that GEM is a gift from Egypt to the whole world
Commenting on the premier’s tour at the working site of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) to follow up the progress of work, historian and researcher Ahmad Nour El Din said that GEM is a gift from Egypt to the whole world as it is considered one of the largest civilizational and archaeological projects in the world, and the largest museum in the world dedicated to one civilization, which is the ancient Egyptian civilization.
Hosted on (Breakfast Show), he shed light on the GEM construction and said that its idea dates back to 5th January 2002, the day of setting the foundation stone of it. On 25th January 2006, the statue of King Ramses II was moved from downtown Cairo to Giza Plateau till January 2018 when it was moved to be in the entrance of the GEM forever, he stated. In May 2018, the last chariot of King TutAnkhAmun was moved from the Egyptian museum in Tahrir Square to the GEM and in August 2021, the solar boat of King Cheops (Khufu) was moved to the Museum of boats to the GEM, he illustrated.
As for the inauguration of the Great Museum due in November 2022, he underlined that the location of the museum is unique and distinguished. He highlighted that in the background, stand the three great pyramids of the three great old Egyptian kings. The GEM is located in an open area assigned for festivals and conferences. In the museum park, trees known to the ancient Egyptians are planted. The museum includes more than 100,000 artefacts in order to receive 5 million visitors annually. It is an environmentally-friendly project as well, he reassured.
Further, Nour el Din explained that the GEM is designed to be more than a museum, it is rather a scientific research center as well as a touristic, cultural and entertainment complex. A big library specialised in Egyptology was founded, he added, referring also to a children’s museum. Entertainment and service hubs are there, he commended.
Moreover, he indicated that there is a restoration department where professors and researchers will be working around the clock, a three-dimensional cinema, places for serving visitors such as restaurants, cafeterias, shops selling gifts, and a parking lot. Not only that but also the museum includes an educational center, a handicraft center, a museum dedicated to the sun boats, and the first field of a hanging obelisk.
He continued that thousands of artefacts are there, that’s why visitors will need days to watch all of them. The excavations and restoration of the second Khufu ship (the solar boat) will be exhibited. King Tutankhamun's collection, more than 5,000 pieces, will be displayed for the first time in one place, he concluded.
(Breakfast Show) is aired daily. This episode is presented by Nermeen Abdel Rahman.
