Environmental expert Amira Sayed said that Wadi Degla Marathon is one of the events by the Ministry of Environment and within the activities of the National Climate Dialogue, which aims to involve all groups and segments of society in climate action, especially with Egypt hosting the COP27 climate conference next November in Sharm el-Sheikh.
In a phone call with (The Breakfast Show), Sayed mentioned that regarding the protectorates in Egypt in particular, the Ministry of Environment is doing a great strategy to develop these natural provinces and make the best use of them in terms of holding several activities. It is the vision of the ministry whom she believed has a broader strategy to expand the activities of such protectorates instead of closing them.
She noted that such a marathon with the participation of Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, and youth helps enhance the intergenerational dialogue and also create a channel of knowledge between senior officials and youth who are encouraged to have a role in climate action in general and in local activities in particular. Such an activity, she added, along with other activities related to the development strategy of the Egyptian protectorate will have a positive impact on weather in terms of raising public awareness and maximizing the benefits of these protectorates.
The environmental expert mentioned that many national initiatives related to climate action are being held in cooperation with civil society referring to the importance of the participation of the private sector in climate action and climate finance issues. Moreover, she added that the Egyptian government has launched a national initiative for smart and green projects; this initiative targeted all governorates in Egypt and open projects selected to be presented in COP27.
The activities of the Sports Day were a running race in which about 100 Egyptian and foreign runners participated, it is another kind of propagating for Egypt’s wonderful sides, Amira Sayed assumed, pinpointing that the ministry of environment’s strategy aims to promote the environmental tourism in Egypt as we have around 30 protectorate which occupy 5 percent of the nation’s land area. She believed that such events will attract more visitors to the natural protectorates as, according to the Ministry of Environment’s statistics, in 2021 more than 3 million people had visited natural reserves in Egypt and she believed that these numbers will increase in the upcoming years.
Finally, she thought that there is more attention and great interest from young people to be engaged in climate action in general and national reserves in particular; hoping more channels would be opened for youth to take part in this field.
The Breakfast Show is aired daily on Nile TV International. This episode is conducted by Nermine Abdel Rahman.
