expert Diaa El Deen El Qousy said that Egypt is a vulnerable country that suffers from climate change effects
Commenting on the extensive meetings Cairo is holding ahead of the COP 27 conference on climate change, expert Diaa El Deen El Qousy said that Egypt is a vulnerable country that suffers from climate change effects.
Over the phone to (Africa Today), he highlighted that we face inundation of the grounds and the southern part of the Delta and the climate change will affect almost all the activities in Egypt such as agriculture, industry, water resources, public health, housing, demography, etc according to the international reports on climate change specifically of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which includes 2500 scientists from all over the world.
He continued that there are some calls for proposals that Egypt can lay in front of the participants of COP 27: first is the reducing and lowering of emissions, then cooperating with countries that produce amounts of fuel and preventing the use of coal as well as providing a huge fund for countries who cannot accommodate to climate change and to help them scientifically, technically, and financially in order to be able to cope with those changes.
Dr. Qousy praised Egypt for setting rules to preserve the environment and local resources, commending that it is one of the leading countries in this respect. We have our reports and our adaptation strategy until 2050, he supported his point, and we have hundreds of papers on the effect of climate change. The COP 27 will be a step forward not only for Egypt but for the whole world, he added.
He stated that Cairo has signed a deal with the EU in April to reinforce cooperation regarding both liquefied natural gas and renewable energy produced green hydrogen supplies between Europe and Africa. The target is to provide Egypt with 20 percent of its energy as a renewable energy of both solar and wind by 2030, he noted.
Further, he said that water issues in Africa are related to climate change issues. Africa is the most affected continent with climate change despite being the least contributor with pollution, that’s why the black continent is calling the whole world to support it and assist it technically and financially.
(Africa Today) is aired daily. This episode is presented by Neveen Ramzy.
