Director General sheds light on history of Tahrir Museum

Sabah Abdel Razek, Director General of the Egyptian Museum, Tahrir, said that the museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East

Sabah Abdel Razek, Director General of the Egyptian Museum, Tahrir, said that the museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and one of the iconic museums in the world.

Abdel Razek mentioned, during an interview with ( Nile Cruise) program, that the museum is home to thousands of masterpieces that depict the history of Egypt from Prehistoric time to Greco-Roman period.

She pointed out that after some archeological discoveries the Egyptian government established a museum in 1835 near Ezbekieh Garden to host all artifacts.

She declared that these artifacts were transferred to another Museum in the Citadel , then to another museum in Boulaq and then to a royal palace in Giza, and in 1902 the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir was inaugurated.

Moreover , she added that nowadays even after transferring King Tutankhamun's treasures to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), Tahrir museum is still attracting many tourists as it hosts many wonderful  artifacts.

She pointed out the famous pieces which will stay at Tahrir Museum: Narmer Palette, Statue of Hatshepsut, Statue of Yuya and Tjuya and the statue of King Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye.
