Hossam Ed-Deen Allam, Lecturer, Al Azhar University, said that the Hijrah is one of the most significant events in the history of Islam.
Allam mentioned, during a new episode of (The Revelation) program, that the word "Hijrah" means to leave or to move from one place to another, and technically it means the migration of Prophet Mohammad and his companions from Mecca to Madinah.
He added that choosing this event to be the beginning of the Islamic Calendar is very telling of its importance, as Hijrah to Madinah represented a safe haven for the Prophet and his companions.
He pointed out that Hijrah not only saved the life of the Prophet from assassination planned by the disbelievers, and saved the early Muslims from persecution and torture but it also enabled the Prophet to convey the message of Islam to all the Arabian Peninsula and to the entire world.
He finally said that despite the persecution, the Prophet was always bringing a sense of hope to his companions and preaching to them to aspire for a better future, which truly happened after Hijrah.
