Chairperson of the Egyptian Sustainable Development Forum Dr. Emadedin Adly said that the conditions for obtaining the Guangzhou International Urban Innovation Award is given to cities that have innovative approaches and local governorates that accomplish achievements in the area of sustainable development and meet the commitment of the new urban agenda towards prosperity and quality of life.
Over the phone to (Cairo Local Time), he added that various cities apply from the whole world even more than one city can apply from the same country. Aswan was selected as one of the best 30 cities in the world as it is the city of development, creativity and renewable energy. The city will be awarded in a high level political meeting in the UN held in New York City, he declared.
He clarified that there is a remarkable issue in this award as it means that Egypt has succeeded in turning its cities to a global standard and implement innovative projects there as Aswan is now a role model. It keeps pace with sustainable development through many projects such as that of solar energy in Binban project, the biggest in the whole world. It also became the perfect urban development city in Egypt, he said.
Dr. Adly shed light on the uniqueness of Aswan as the city of culture and civilization. It has always lived in peace and serenity with its warm weather, its distinguished location, its civilization, the pharaonic temples and the behavior of its people.
A total of 273 initiatives from 175 cities and local governments in 60 countries and regions applied for the 5th Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation, which fully demonstrated global cities' determination to adhere to exchanges and cooperation under the epidemic. The Guangzhou Award is putting a special focus on innovative approaches taken by local and regional governments to accomplish the SDGs and meet the commitments of the New Urban Agenda towards the prosperity and quality of life of their citizens.
