Tourism expert Alaa Khalifa defines the term “eco-friendly tourism hotels” as hotels maintaining features and low impact on the environment and maintaining a low carbon imprint as well as recycling most of their resources and these are the main criteria of a hotel to gain such a certificate as an eco-friendly and a green tourism partner.
It is a rapidly spread trend in the world nowadays as it raises awareness about forests, mountains, deserts, waters and culture and it is also a sustainable part of the sustainable tourism impact adopted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) encouraging countries to support communities to increase employment and getting involvement of local societies into hotels that are eco-friendly, he elaborated.
He announced, in an interview with (Cairo Local Time), that tourism has got a very heavy and dangerous impact on natural resources especially flora and fauna, desert, corals, etc. so we want to maintain environment to become a viable resource for the next generations.
Khalifa declared that there is a number of green hotels in Siwa Oasis and they are full to the most. He referred that these hotels are as expensive as any 5-star hotel and sometimes twice the price, hence lots of people long for those natural resources environment-friendly facilities.
For more illustration, he mentioned that the hotels help in saving the surrounding environment by using tools that the locals have been using for hundreds of years for example getting rid of wastes through eco-friendly ways or getting clean water from the mountains or engaging people who are living in the surroundings hence decreasing unemployment rate.
Khalifa advised that the ministry launches an awareness campaign not only to the local individuals but also to the companies which will sell the product to the customer who is the tourist. There are various kinds of tourism, he continued, and Egypt as a tourism country sells itself easy because it is a destination for tourists.
Concerning the exhibitions travelling around the world with pieces of Tutankhamun or even replicas, he believes that Egypt can exhibit its historical treasures abroad only as a teaser for no more than one month, otherwise foreigners will not have the zeal to come and watch those monuments in Egypt, at the same time combine this with networking of local companies to offer promotions, programs and packages and provide different products of the country for all kinds of tourism whether cultural, at leisure, eco-friendly, religious, recreational, etc.
