Expert:Localization of production boosts Egyptian market

Economic expert Engineer Mustafa Waly said that developing the industrial sector in Egypt is one of the political leadership’s top priorities which is going to be achieved through building new industrial zones, installing and localising many industries, the full partnership with the private sector in various domains and benefiting from the veteran foreign expertise in each industry.

Over the phone to (Breakfast Show), he shed light on the most important industries which the government should localise. The concept of localization itself is very significant, he stressed, so it should be one of our medium and long-term objectives and goals. He illustrated that localisation is a direct manifestation that a country has a certain development to a certain degree i.e. the country is depending on its own local everything in the production process such as its local materials, production, expertise, labour, etc. We have to increase the local percentage of any of our products to be called (Made in Egypt). That is a great objective Egypt is working on now, the expert reaffirmed.

He explained that whenever we have a good industry and good reputation in the international market, this could be our start to increasingly develop and boost our exports by increasing the capacity production and maintaining the highest quality. There are heavy sophisticated industries such as car manufacturing. If Egypt can get the best local material as a starting point and employ a higher advanced technology to reach the international top classification, we are able to succeed as we have a very good local content.

Waly stated that we are an emerging market, thus we can compete in some items such as the chips of computers and electronic applications as Egypt has the best silica for this material. Silicon technology is the backbone for most electronics including photovoltaic solar cells and micro-electronic components used for telecom, automotive electronics, military equipment, and others. The raw materials of silica (silica-sand and quartz) are available, with very high purification, in Egypt.

He also mentioned the pharmaceutical industry and the drugs city inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah e-Sisi as well as the textile city in Mahala. We have many industrial zones in other cities such as the Benban Project in Aswan, the dairy project in Borg El Arab, the fertilizers complex in Sokhna and others.

He highlighted the president’s visit to Germany where he met the CEO of boatbuilder Lürssen, to discuss cooperation in the maritime industry. Egypt will cooperate with the German company in the shipyard development, technical training programs, and enhancing Egyptian cadres' abilities in these areas.
