Amb Khattab hails Sisi’s keenness on women’s empowerment

Ambassador Moshira Khattab said that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi speech in the event of Mother’s Day was very focused on what was done for women

Ambassador Moshira Khattab said that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi speech in the event of Mother’s Day was very focused on what was done for women. It was a very objective overview of what women achieved, she declared.

Over the phone to (Daily Debate), she asserted that the president spoke his mind with the audience without papers. He mentioned issuing a separate law (on its own) prohibiting and banning child marriage rather than Law 126 which gives a mild penalty for the registrar.

Khattab hopes that we see criminalization of child marriage for it is an act of violence against the girl as she is deprived of education as soon as she gets married. She also gets marginalized, her choices in life become narrow and limited and her health is weakened by having children at an early age. She pinpointed the president’s ensuring the safety and security of girls using public transportation from harassment and abuse.

She also hailed the new Personal Status Law, which regulates marriage, divorce, and guardianship and custody issues. Sisi said that it is not about the law but how to nurture our children without bad mouthing the mother or father while talking to them. We have to raise them on respect and love despite the parents’ disagreement, she reiterated.

Khattab stressed that we have to change the culture of divorce as it is not a war between divorced couples. This needs understanding, she reassured, and requires the meaning of maximising common interest and reaching consensus rather than competing .. all this for the sake of the children. As a society, she illustrated, we have to continue dialogue and conversation to replace the current hostile culture by a new understanding one, she said.

She asserted that under the tenure of president Sisi, women are now enjoying 66 places in both chambers of the parliament which used to be 35 only. There is also an unprecedented number of female ministers, in addition to women judges who are admitted in the judiciary and prosecution. Illustrating her point, the ambassador pointed out that women are gaining more rights and taking paces of achievement in an atmosphere of non-discrimination.

(Daily Debate) is aired daily. This episode is presented by Ahmad Nader.
