Fatma Ragi, 1st Assistant to the General Director of the Egyptian Museum, said that the plan to renovate the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir is implemented in cooperation with the European Union and it did not stop despite the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ragi mentioned, in an interview with the daily program (Breakfast Show), that the Egyptian Museum is one of the iconic museums in the world, and one of the oldest because it was inaugurated 118 years ago.
She pointed that the renovations include the paints, the display halls, the lighting and the garden of the museum, adding that renovation work will happen without closing the museum.
Further, she declared that opening the Grand Egyptian Museum will not be a threat to the old one, because the Tahrir museum will continue to display important treasures and artifacts among them Narmer Palette, so the two museums will complete one another.
She reiterated that the museum contains masterpieces from all the Ancient Egyptian dynasties as well as from Greco-Roman period, and there is also a children’s museum which displays lego pieces from all the artifacts to help children to understand Egypt’ history.
She finally said that the plan is also to turn the surrounding Tahrir square to an open-air extension to the museum, by transferring an obelisk and other masterpieces to it.
