Dr Salah Hassan, professor of global marketing in the United States of America confirmed it is a turning point throughout history to honor Arabic worldwide
In light of UNESCO’s declaration of December 18 to be World Arabic Language Day since 2012, Dr Salah Hassan, professor of global marketing in the United States of America confirmed it is a turning point throughout history to honor Arabic worldwide, believing that “Arabic is a bridge between cultures”. It is great that such a day coincides with the decision of the United Nations General Assembly in 1973 to include Arabic as one of its primary languages, he highlighted.
Over his voice on (Cairo Local Time), he said that Arabic is one of the world’s most diverse and inclusive languages. Hassan reaffirmed that language is a vital cultural asset which harmonizes and conveys the nation’s identity and integrated image. According to him, “Speak Arabic” initiatives are paramount as they reflect our heritage and communicate all our details in life.
Illustrating some of the main reasons for honoring Arabic, he referred to the first two universities established in the whole world which were Arabic speaking academies; Al Azhar University in Egypt and Qarawiyyin in Morocco. Arabic, he remarked, is pivotal not only for its cultural significance but also for contribution to scientific discoveries by Arab speakers.
In that regard, he mentioned Arabic as the native language of the father of Algebra, al-Khwarizmi, and of the founding father of Mathematics, Ibn Al Haitham. He reassured that Arabic is considered either the first or the second language of almost 600 million people in the three continents, he added.
As an expatriate, professor Hassan reiterated that communities of Arab speakers are very keen to strengthen their mother tongue language within their families who proved more familiar and extended more than any other foreign families. Arabic now becomes more accessible and recognizable in the United States through various media platforms in recognition that Arabic plays a great role in societies, he concluded, calling on the Egyptian leadership to declare a world day celebration for “Speak Arabic”.
(Cairo Local Time) is aired on Nile TV International on Sunday-Thursday. This episode is presented by Enjy Maher.
