Former Assistant Foreign Minister Hussein Haridy hailed the two-day dialogue among the 14 rival Palestinian factions in Cairo under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah e-Sisi to agree on the modalities of the parliamentary elections due on May 22, the presidential elections on July 31, and the Palestinian National Council elections on Aug 31.
Over the phone with The Daily Debate, he admitted the success of the first round of the national dialogue among the factions, extending hopes that the second round of the dialogue due in March will prove successful as well.
“The upcoming elections will be the first to take place in the Palestinian authority since 2006”, he said, which is considered a path forward to renewal of the Palestinian legitimacy and a force to ensure security.
He gave credit to Egypt for exerting colossal efforts to broker and reconcile between the two main rivals Fatah and Hamas since 2007.
