Commenting on the Minister of Immigration’s congratulation to him and his wife for being awarded the Medal of Australia 2020 in Melbourne, Mr Raouf Youssef extended his thanks to Dr. Nabila Makram and said that he is very proud of the award in recognition of their services in the social work among the Egyptian and Arab communities.
Over the phone to (Cairo Local Time), the Egyptian holder of the “Australian Medal” paid tribute to his wife, Soraya, who supported him. He shed light on his journey to Australia which began in 1978 when he arrived in Australia. He used to support those who came to the country through helping them to get a job.
After retiring, the couple established the ‘Social Club for Wise Men’ for the elderly in their church which brought together the elderly of the Arabic speakers who have suffered from isolation due to linguistic and cultural differences, he highlighted, asserting that people were very happy and joined them every Saturday when they gathered.
He added that he and his wife used to accompany patients from the Egyptian and Arab communities to doctors and help translate information for them, and also take them on rides to gardens.
Likewise, Mrs Soraya Youssef was very grateful for the prize. She said that Dr. Makram supported and encouraged them. She added that they established the social club and they help each other. She used to take old people to doctors’ appointments and help translate the information for them. She even cooks Egyptian foods for them.
