Tourism expert Yomna Salem assured that Egypt has been among the first countries to take preventive safety measures against the deadly coronavirus, mentioning that at the beginning of the pandemic the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili commended Egypt’s commitment to the international safety measures in a lot of the Red Sea resorts and hotels. That’s why Egypt is selected as one of the best tourist destinations during the last couple of years, she highlighted.
In a phone call with (Africa Today), Salem added that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and most of the travel agencies have vaccinated their staff which helped maintain the tourism sector. She noted that Egypt’s good weather is a blessing as tourists could enjoy the sunshine on the Red Sea shores, Luxor and Aswan Nile Cruises, and outdoor temples where they can keep their social distance and not be locked in indoor sites all the trip.
Cultural tourism is the kind of tourism that flourished during the first quarter of the year 2022, the tourism expert said, believing that beach tourism came in second place especially for European tourists. She stressed the need to develop more programs for the other types of tourism and to combine them with cultural tourism, the main and traditional kind of tourism in Egypt.
The Tourism and Antiquities Ministry announced that Egypt ranked first in Africa, fifth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and 51st globally in the 2021 Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) published by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The ministry said that Egypt jumped six places compared to the 2019 edition of the TTDI and has got the second greatest percentage improvement (+4.3%, 57th to 51st) in the entire index.
