Dr. Amr Saleh, Former Adviser to the World Bank, said that France is not really serious about leaving the European Union. According to him as one who lived in France, it is just a political manipulation to attract some voices during the coming election.
In a phone call to (To The Point) programme, Saleh declared that both France and Germany are the important forces behind the EU block, adding that the young generation in France are attached to the idea of the union between the European countries. They are different from the British, he revealed, as France has always been a country that wanted to regroup countries. Thus, he dismissed that French President Emmanuel Macron would even question and bring it to a public referendum.
“I lived in France during the 90s,” Dr. Saleh illustrated, saying that he witnessed the construction of the eurozone and the creation of the political and scientific spheres. He stressed how people were really keen to endorse and support such an environment; a larger environment where they can move and have bilateral and commercial relations. France is a country of culture, Dr. Saleh mentioned, stressing that former French presidents were devoted to regrouping countries around the idea of certain union.
The former adviser to The World Bank said that the European Union survived hard moments that hit its economy as the Greece financial crisis erupted in 2010 and as the Great Spanish Depression years before. Moreover, the European economy is an old economy where people have some difficulties in bearing with competition with the Americans, Chinese, Koreans and the Japanese, and also some growing countries, Saleh mentioned.
He believed that things will be more difficult in the coming years especially with the COVID-19 consequences and that’s why the European countries and especially France will be keen to be a part of certain union, adding that some rules might be changed between the European countries. France has always been a “leader”, Dr. Amr Saleh conveyed, assuming that France will not even think about leaving the European Union.
Emmanuel Macron has been sent a huge warning that Frexit is now "possible and desirable" as pressure continues to build on the French President following the UK's historic departure from the European Union.
(To The Point) is aired on Nile TV International and presented by Dina Othman. It is prepared by Eman Ghareb and Dina Othman, Assistant Director Yasser Youssef and Director Reda Mnsour.
