Bayoumi: Egypt, US ramp up strategic regional goals

Ambassador Gamal Bayoumi, former assistant to foreign minister, said that the US- Egypt strategic dialogue reiterates the importance of bilateral partnership, believing that the two sides explored all the possibilities to have much wider and deeper relations.

In a phone call with (The Breakfast Show), Bayoumi stressed that after the two-day session, Egypt and the US understood the importance of being partners. It has been a sort of strategic alliance for decades, he said, adding that since President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the American President Dwight D. Eisenhower the relations started to be a sort of very close cooperation.

The ambassador pinpointed that despite the differences in some files, Egypt succeeded in keeping the relation in a “good shape”. The United States is one of our main trade partners, a source of technology, and a source of development assistance, he said. Since the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, the United States helped the Egyptian economy and its military power.

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed political matters and security, Bayoumi mentioned, adding that both sides are fighting the organized crime, terrorism, illegal immigration, and drug trafficking.

Concerning Libya, he highlighted that both sides maintain the same position which is getting rid of all the foreign forces in the country, in addition to exploring the possibility of getting a democratic solution in Sudan.

The recent round of the US-Egypt Strategic Dialogue was held from 8 to 9 November in Washington. In a joint statement issued following the conclusion of the dialogue, the two sides noted that 2022 will be the centennial celebration of the start of US-Egypt diplomatic relations.
