Dr. Hassan Wagih, Professor at Al-Azhar University, said that feast is a good celebration for remembering blessings of Allah. Celebrations take place all over Africa but there are certain distinctive features for each country delivered to us through more than 40,000 students who are studying at Al Azhar University nowadays, he added.
In a phone call with (Africa Today), Wagih gave different examples of African countries and their way of celebrating Eid Al-Adha. In Mozambique, for instance, after Eid’s prayers everyone rushes to shake hands as it means spreading peace and good spirit. In Somalia, people prefer to distribute meat for poor ones, but in Tunisia they pay visits to the graves to have mercy on them, and in all these countries buying new clothes is essential, he mentioned.
Each country has its unique dress; he said referring to Morocco where Eid Al-Adha is considered a time for buying gold and traditional suits. As for Algeria, it is important to visit the relatives having a special cake for this occasion, but in Comoros, sports’ competitions such as jogging and wrestling are the way of celebration, he illustrated.
Dr. Wagih believed that all the cultures in the world shared some common ground that has to be identified because some people look at differences as a major motivation for disputes, for hatred and for war. Cultures, he added, should be studied and shared aspects have to be highlighted to build peace on them.
“Africa is our depth,” he said, pointing to the Nile River as the route that should connect all the Africans together. Wagih hailed President Abdel Fattah El- Sisi’s efforts to reconnect Egypt with "its depth” through exchanging visits with his African counterparts believing that the Egyptian leadership is very keen to enhance good relations with all African countries. “Our continent is very rich and it is a hope for all the Africans as well as the entire world,” he stressed.
Africa Today is aired on Nile TV International and this episode is conducted by Nevine Ramzy.
